It’s that time of year again!
Pinterest just revealed its top trends prediction for 2016 in The Pinterest 100, an annual list of ideas for what to eat, make and try in the coming year. Here, is a look at the 10 Food & Drink trends for 2016. Sit back, relax and prepare to own the holiday cocktail party conversation.
1. Veggie Subbing
“Cut calories with veggie swaps for your favorite carbs, meats and more.”
We're already on board with spiraling vegetables to make delicious “pasta”, and each of us have our own twist on Spaghetti Squash … so we see your cauliflower pizza crust, Pinterest, and raise you a Portobello mushroom sandwiched black bean patty.
2. Gourmet traditional cuisine
"Gourmet spins on traditional cultural cuisines."
Well, we are in the age of reinventing everything, so, why not take a new spin on traditional cuisine next? Hot Dog? (scoff) Give me an apple and sage stuffed chicken sausage in a brioche roll, with maple wholegrain mustard, please.
3. Pour-over coffee
Interesting? Does this mean the days of quick and easy Keurig®’s are fading? After all, butterand coffee is so 2014. Don’t get us wrong, there is nothing like a nice pour-over coffee, but who has the time for this? Who? Tell us. We want to be them.
4. Bento box meals
Like grown-up Lunchables®? This type of meal prep is right up our alley and these delicious examples are making us re-think our Tupperware® inventory.
Craft beer has been on the rise (lucky for us, we in SLO County happen to be surrounded by award winning local breweries) as has DIY, so it makes sense that home brewing is taking off. But, gone are the days of garages full of equipment, now you can brew your beer on your counter (right next to your pour-over coffee kettle) with a PicoBrew system.
Cocktails made with beer? Hesitant? … Head to Figueroa Mountain in Arroyo Grande, CA and pick a selection from their “Cocktail” menu to get a taste of this trend.
7. Savory dishes and desserts unseating sweets
Parmesan French Toast with Hollandaise sauce? Sign us up! Other than that, we’re a little afraid of making something along the lines of Rachel’s infamous trifle on Friends.
8. DIY infused olive oils
Living on the Central Coast, artisan olive oils are common place around these parts and we’ve had the luxury of tasting some of the best! Head to Pasolivo, We Olive or Olea Farmfor inspiration to make your own.
9. Distilling your own booze
Hmm … I think we’ll leave this one to the experts and make a trip to visit our friends at RE:FIND in Paso Robles, CA.
10. Avocado oil
All hail the avocado. We’re still riding the avocado toast train after all … but we’re keeping our jar of coconut oil, too.
